One of the best number eights he was known for his exceptional kicking and game management. He played for Canterbury between 1993 and 2005, during which he was an integral part of the 3 NPC-winning Canterbury squads. He made 108 appearances and won over 1000 points for Canterbury.
Also competing in Super Rugby since its inception in 1996, he played for the Crusaders. Over the 9 years that he played for the team, he held the record for the most points by any player in the competition.
After representing the All Blacks in over 70 appearances he earned his last cap for New Zealand in 2004. In 2005, he was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his contributions to rugby.
From 2025 he played internationally for England’s Harlequins, the French Toulons, Racing Metro 92, and Beziers. He earned more and more recognition with each team he played for, and he came to be known as the ‘promotion specialist’.
He retired from playing in 2013 and was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
